In continuation of the State Government’s quest towards Urban Regeneration Development and Abating Environmental and Security nuisance in the State, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), today removed illegal buildings built on drainage paths and government setbacks at Oke-Olu Community in Mainland Local Government Area of the State.

According to General Manager LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki (fnia) stated that prior to the removal of the illegal structures Quit Notices had been served to all the occupants instructing them to vacate which they failed to obey.

 

He also stated that the illegal buildings posed a significant risk to both the environment and public safety, due to the  blockage of the drainage systems by the occupants hence, their removal.

Furthermore, the building owners also failed to adhere with the Lagos State Building Codes and Regulations concerning drainage system, as the State’s Building Guidelines stipulate that a minimum setback of 25 meters between any structure and a drainage channel must be observed during construction.

Oki, emphasized that the removal of the illegal buildings, by the State Government was aimed at preventing  flooding during the rainy season an incident that can lead to loss of lives and properties and generally for free flow of water through the drainage systems that will help safeguard the urban landscape from further environmental degradation.

The boss also implored property owners/developers to adhere strictly to the State’s Building Codes and Regulations in order to avoid similar enforcement actions in the future as this the Agency will continue to ensure a safer, secured, organized and liable Lagos.

The demolition exercise of illegal structures built on government setbacks and drainage systems are just one of many ongoing initiatives by the State Government to address the menace of illegal constructions, distressed buildings, and environmental hazards across the State.

In a similar development, LASBCA also totally removed partially demolished blocks of shops by their owners after serving them Quit and Demolition Notices at Ademuyiwa Street, Ebute Metta area of the State.
