The General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Arc Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, led an enforcement team to sensitize traders in Marina, Lagos Island on the dangers of keeping shanties under the bridge.
The enforcement team, which comprises of officials from the LASBCA, Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, LASPPPA and other relevant government agencies, met with the traders and explained to them the negative impact which includes obstruction of vehicular and human traffic leading to congestion and insecurity.
They also emphasized the need for a safe and accessible environment for residents and visitors to the area.
The traders were informed that the obstruction of pedestrian ways is a violation of the Lagos State Physical Planning and Urban Development Law, and that they could face penalties if they did not comply with the regulations.
They were therefore advised to make use of the designated market spaces provided for by the government, and to remove the shanties from under the bridge in order to restore the area to its original state.
Arc. Oki speaking on behalf of the team commended the traders for their cooperation and willingness to work with the agencies to maintain a safe and accessible environment for all residents and visitors to the area.
He also urged other traders and residents in the community to emulate the Marina traders who agreed to do the needful, to always comply with the regulations in order to keep the environment clean and safe.
The General Manager noted that this latest move by the Government Agencies indicates Government is not only interested in enforcing regulations but also ensuring that the livelihoods of the traders are not affected.
