URBAN REGENERATION, LASBCA SENSITIZES RESIDENTS OF MAKOKO COMMUNITY

…..Give 3 months ultimatum to clean-up the environment.

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, in it’s quest towards Urban Development, Regeneration and abating Environmental and Security nuisance, today sensitized the residents of Makoko Community in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the State.

The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki during the exercise informed and enlightened the community leaders about the State Government expectations from the members of the community that will help safeguard, protect and better the lives of those in the community.

Oki warned that all the structures under the powerline must be removed and the setback of not less than 100 meters away from the high tension transmission line should be maintained during construction in order to prevent hazardous effects of radiation from the high tension lines on the people.

“The life of an average Nigerian is more important than the money making venture that a building owner/developer that built under powerline is going to make because when a powerline accidentally caved in the money will never bring back the lives loss” he stated.

The General Manager further highlighted the significance of maintaining the aesthetic appeal of Makoko. He urged the community leaders to promote a cohesive urban layout and uniform roofing designs to enhance the area’s visual integrity on or before 20th December, 2024.

Oki also appealed to the Makoko community not to accommodate sawmill operators recently evacuated from the Okobaba area, explaining that the State Government has already allocated a suitable location for them at Agbowa in Ikorodu Local Government Area of the State.

He emphasized that the new site is equipped with modern business amenities which include, good road networks, electricity, and water, to facilitate ease of operations.

Responding, the Aare Onikoyi of Yoruba Land, Aare William Tomori applauded LASBCA efforts in making Lagos State a 21st century mega city through strict aherence to Building Regulations by builders and developers.

He also reiterated the community readiness to render necessary support in order to actualized the government sets objectives in Makoko community.

“We are committed to partnering with the State Government as Makoko Axis to Ilaje and Bariga Areas are like the selling point to what Lagos State should be, so that people coming in and out through the Third Mainland Bridge should be able to see the semblance of the State that is viable, rich and beautiful” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the Baales, Chief Oyebade Ali the Baale of Ayetoro Community also agreed that owners of buildings/developers will adhere strictly to the instructions given to them by the State Government within the stipulated period for the betterment of the State and the Community in general.
